Chapter Two: Inside the Great Tree
The Tree was enormous on the inside as well. I stared up in amazement at the several floors above me, and that's when I noticed that dangling from the walls and ceilings were large, thick spider webs.
I gulped as I continued forward slowly, observing my surroundings. The inside was circular, and the center was a large, circular web. Navi fluttered around in front of me and beckoned me onward. "Come on Link, this way."
As soon as walked out forward towards the web, another giant plant burst out of the ground. The thing was, this plant could actually jump towards me if I got close enough. I dodged it just barely, falling back with a frightened yelp.
"Hey! That's another Deku Baba Link!" Navi flew out in front of it. "I'll target it for you. If you hit it when it lunges at you, it will stand upright. Quick, hit it!"
The hideous plant opened and closed its mouth as some type of acidic liquid oozed out of its mouth hungrily. I took small steps towards the creature, ready for any attack. Suddenly, it sprang forward, but I was ready. I side stepped quickly and cut a portion of the step, but not all the way through. The creature shot upright immediately. I thrusted forward with my small sword and cut the plant in half, killing it instantly. I examined the plants remains carefully, searching for anything else I could use as a weapon. That's when I noticed the left over part of the mouth was left. A deku nut.
Deku Nuts are a great tool to use to stun or shock people. I can remember once when Mido hid a deku nut in my bed, and when I lied down…
It STUNG.
I stuffed the Deku nut in my pouch and moved through the circular room towards a large thin wall covered in leafy green vines.
Navi fluttered over towards it and tugged on the vines. "Look at this wall! The vines growing on it give it a rough surface! Maybe you can climb the a second floor! Are you a good climber?"
I shrugged. " I guess so. It'll be difficult with this sword and shield on but… I'll try."
I gripped the vines tightly and began to pull my self up the wall. I gasped slightly at the weight on my back pulling me down, but I kept on going. Finally, I grabbed onto the ledge and pulled myself over.
"Not bad!" Navi said. Now let's go in there!" There was a small opening door next to us. I got to my feet quickly and opened the wooden door, and then shut it behind me.
Almost as soon as I closed the door, large metal bars came down over the door, trapping me inside. My eyes grew wide, and Iran towards the door, banging on the bars. "They won't budge!" I exclaimed tiredly. Navi raised an eyebrow. "That's because it's metal, genius. LOOK OUT!" I immediately turned with my shield raised, and just in time too. A small creature sticking out of the ground with a large circular nose, orange eyes, a grassy head, and a small body with no arms was sticking out of the ground, and had just shot a deku nut straight for me. I brought my shield up over myself just in time, causing the deku nut to scrap across my shield, and me to stumble back and hit the ground. The Deku nut went flying back off my shield and hit the little creature sticking out of the ground.
It squealed loudly and began to back up as I advanced. Suddenly it stopped and lowered it's head.
"OW-Ow-Ow! Forgive me, master! If I give you a tip, will you let me go?!"
I raised an eyebrow. "Navi, what is this thing?"
"A Deku Shrub," She replied almost immediately. They are a race of the forest plants, and can shoot Deku nuts out of the tube that you call a nose."
I stare at it, but then nod my head. "Fine, what is it?"
"If you jump off a high cliff, try to roll on the ground when you land and you won't get hurt from the fall. I can't guarantee it will work, though, if the cliff is really, really high, heh heh!" The Shrub suddenly hopped over to the other side of the room, and burrowed into the ground.
The metal bars suddenly rose on the door behind me, and in front of me. I stared in shock, and then back up at Navi.
"This is strange." I say after a while.
She flies out in front of me, pointing at the door I'm supposed to go through. "Well ,yes Link, this place is going to be strange. The Great Deku Tree is cursed! There's going to be many monsters around here." We entered the room, and I jumped across a platform, and in front of a wooden treasure chest. I opened the top of it quickly, and pulled out a wooden slingshot.
I stared at Navi with an uncertainty.
"What?! It may not look helpful, but a slingshot will certainly help you with all the monsters attacking!" I shrugged and walked back through the door.
"So… what do you think caused the Great Deku Tree to be cursed, Navi?" I asked as we entered the main circular room again. She rubbed her small chin in thought.
"I honestly don't know, Link. I'm certain that he knows though, so once you get out of here, I'm sure he'll tell you."
If I get out of here, that is.
"There's no other doors, Navi." I said as I glanced all around the walls. She pointed at more vines extending all the way up to another floor.
"Just do the same thing that you did last time. Just take care of the skullwalltulas first."
I didn't think that it was possible, but my eyes grew wider. "The WHAT?"
I glanced on the vines and saw what they were. A spider bigger than my head was crawling on the wall. It's body was a skull, and it's legs were striped with black and yellow.
I opened up my pouch, pulling out my new slingshot and pebbles for ammunition. I aimed slowly at the disgusting creature. Navi nodded, "That's it Link! You're getting the hang of things!" I fired a pebble, but missed the skullwalltula by a couple inches. Navi frowned, "Try again."
I aimed again, shooting the spider down this time. The spider made a sickening noise, and fell to the ground before my feet, it's legs curling up. I made a disgusted face and stepped around it carefully. I gripped the vines and began to climb up.
"You're doing great, Link!" I grunted as I tried to pull myself along. "Just a little more and then we'll-" Navi froze in mid sentence and gasped.
"W-What?" But I looked up, and I saw what she was talking about. Another skullwalltula was crawling towards me at top speed. My eyes grew wide and I tried to untangled my foot from the vines, but the spider was too quick. It hit me hard on the side of my arm, and sent me falling down towards the ground.
I hit the ground hard with a small cry. Navi immediately fluttered down to my aid, but I shooed her off. "Don't!" I groaned. "I'm fine!" I got to my feet slowly and aimed at the deadly spider with my slingshot. "So you're going to play like that stupid spider? Fine. I'll play." I let go of the pebble and it stuck the spider hard, causing it to hit the ground and curled up in a lifeless position. I breathed in and out and gripped the vines once again, pulling myself up to the third floor.
I turned over onto my side and closed my eyes, attempting to catch my breath. Navi crossed her arms. "You are so out of shape." I shot an angry look at her. "Am not! You're just not tired because you can fly everywhere!"
She smirked, "Guess that is one reason." I glanced around.
"Well? What now, Navi?" She flow around and glanced over the edge.
"Hey, there's a huge web down there right? Well, it's blocking a hole to another basement down there. Maybe if you could break that web, you could get into the basement."
I glanced down at the web as well, and rose and eyebrow. "Are you insane?! If I jump this high there's no way I'd ever live!"
She shakes her head furiously. "No! If you land ON the web, you'll survive! And if you don't land on the web, just use the rolling technique that the Deku Shrub mentioned."
I glanced down, uncertain again. The Great Deku tree DID say that I'd need courage, right? This must be the moment.
I walk towards the edge, take a couple steps back, and leap off the edge. I yelled as I approached the web, closed my eyes, and waited for impact, but something different happened.
The web snapped, and I fell through the hole, into the basement, and down into the chilly water.
I came up with a yell.
"Woah! Navi did you see that?!" Navi pointed.
"I don't think we have time to celebrate Link."
She was right. Deku Babas surrounded me on the land. I quickly got out of the water, pulling my sword out in the process.
The man-eating plant lunched at me, but I quickly cut against the plant's stem, and it shriveled up and died. A painful sensation searing against my left leg caused me to scream and turn around, slashing in all directions. The Deku baba's acid like mouth was clamped around my leg, and biting down furiously. I screamed again and sliced through the stem, detaching it from the rest of its body. I turned around to look at my leg, tears streaming down my face.
Much of the skin was burned and red. The illuminated fairy's eyes widened in concern. "Link, we have to stop now." I shook my head, and attempted to move forward.
"No… I have to… keep going. The Deku Tree's… in trouble!" I gasp and struggle to keep moving. A giant spider's web was dangling over the door, and I pushed past it with quite a struggle, covering myself in webs and dirt. Finally I reached the door, and pried it open.
A Deku shrub was halfway buried inside the ground in the center of the room, staring at me with its yellow, frightening eyes. I readied my shield off my back as it shot a deku nut out of the tube on its face. The nut reflected back, striking it in the face. It popped out of the ground, and stared up at me nervously as I towered over it.
"I surrender! Have mercy master! Listen, if you spare me, I'll tell the secret of the queen!"
My eyebrows raise curiously, "The queen? Who's the queen?" Navi came fluttering in front of the small plant and sat on the tube.
"Who's this queen?" Navi interrogated.
The Shrub continued. "You can only best the majesty if you stun her." The Deku begins bouncing away, his eyes full of shame, "Forgive me, Queenie!"
I frown and leap to catch the Deku, "Get back here!" I barely grab the edge of its leaf as it burrows into the ground.
"Ugh!" Navi groans. "He got away! That lying little…" I frowned, pondering what the Deku said.
"Stun the queen?" Suddenly, I got it. "Maybe… the queen is the one who cursed the Great Deku Tree!"
Navi's eyes lit up. "That might be! The question is… what and where is the queen?" I limped out of the room and pulled myself onto the top of a platform. I groan at how exhausted I am, but don't hesitate to keep moving.
"That's an easy answer, it's a Deku shrub. So far, all we've seen is plants."
We come upon another web that leads down to another basement. Navi glances up, searching for a higher place that we can jump from. She shakes her head, frustrated.
"Link, there's no way we can break this web by just jumping on it!"
I notice a small torch in the corner of the room, and my eyes light up. I run over towards the torch, pulling a deku stick out of my magic pouch. I light the stick on fire, and throw it at the web. The web instantly burns, and reveals a long drop into water below. "Alright Link!" Navi exclaims. "Now all we need to do is jump down there!"
"You mean all I have to do is jump down there," I saw with a frown on my face. She smirks.
"Whatever, get to jumping." I stare down the hole, and gulp. This jump was very, very high. Higher than the last one.
Navi huffed, "Well, what are you waiting for?! Get going!" Suddenly, a tiny shove in the back caused me to loose my balance, and fall. I yelled as I fell down the large hole, and into another small pond with a splash. I pulled myself out of the water and onto land, gasping for breath. Navi comes fluttering down, and smirks.
"See?! You did it!" I glare at her.
"If I ever manage to get up… you are so dead." She grabs my ear with her tiny hands, and tries to pull me up anyways, "Come on Link! Just a little farther, look! We can take care of this queen and be on our way! Then you can go back to your nice warm tree house. Won't that be nice?"
I smiled at the thought of it. I could have Saria come over and play for a while, and then I could have a nice warm dinner and go to sleep. I could finally go to bed knowing that I was a real Kokiri.
I pushed my self to my feet, wincing at the pain in my leg, and trudged along towards the door. I pulled it open from underneath, and stared into the room which was before me. I slowly walked into the pitch black room. The only light was Navi fluttering around me.
A loud thud noise caused me to jump and back up, but I bumped into the wall. The door was gone. It was either gone, or blocked, but I couldn't tell because of the darkness.
"Navi… why can't I leave?" I whispered quietly, my heart pounding in my chest.
"The door shut behind us…" She replied almost too softly. Suddenly, a loud crunching noise caused my heart to skip a beat. It came from the ceiling.
"Navi… what's…" But I didn't get to finish. I noticed that on the ceiling, was a giant orange and green eyeball, with red veins around the center. I froze and didn't move, but it was too late. The room suddenly lightened a little, but I still couldn't see very well.
I gaped and my stomach lurched when I saw what was on the ceiling.
An enormous hairy spider with many legs and one eyeball stared down at me, with sharp fangs dripping with venom. I opened my mouth to scream, but nothing came out but a small, terrified noise. An image taken right out of my nightmares was on the ceiling of this room. It crawled forward inch by inch so slowly and finally it fell onto the ground with a large noise, right in front of me, and screeched loudly, piercing my ears.
"Link…" Navi began, her voice hoarse and utterly terrified. "I'm starting to think that this is the queen.
